Essentially it can be said that the purpose of life coaching is to help people change. Through a process which is practical and requires much input from yourself, life coaching will help you to identify problems and issues and work on a plan to resolve them. The process can help improve self-esteem, awareness, confidence and ability, whilst helping you to make positive changes in your life for the better.
Your first step will involve finding a good life coach to help you identify those areas of your life which need improvement. Life coaching can help make choices and decisions easier, whilst empowering us to achieve our long term goals and ambitions. For it to be successful, there has to be action and for that there needs to be potential. Life coaching is the belief that anything can change, not everything must change.
Through sessions with a life coach you will be able to split your life down into its various parts – work, relationships, home etc and then help you to identifiy those areas that need improvement and the steps you need to take. If you do not follow those steps, then do not expect any change to happen. Your life coach will set you challenges between each session and after about four sessions you should begin to see the changes in your life taking effect. If they are not, then you need to talk with your life coach about why they are not working and how to move forward.
Sessions are typically carried out over the phone, but can be face-to-face or within a group setting if you prefer. Usually they will only last as long as an hour and you can choose how many you want to have. Life coaching is not expensive and the benefits to you should be life changing – for the better. You will never be told what to do and it is up to you to set the boundaries. Your life coach will offer you feedback and you should do the same, particularly if something has worked well for you or not at all.
Life coaching is not a form of therapy but can be viewed as an alternative to more conventional forms of counseling. Whether you want to improve your life on a personal level or improve your career prospects, life coaching can be the tool to your success, but you will need to action the strategies you put in place with your life coach for this to happen. You don’t have to hire a professional life coach either, perhaps there is someone within your close circle of friends who could give you the same level of support and guidance, or maybe you should look to someone you idolise to give you the inspiration you need to succeed.
